# Short-Term Fire Hazard

## Identify areas where wildfires are more likely to be detected and plan your response ahead of time.

**Short-Term Fire Hazard (STFH)** is an AI-powered forecast that helps you identify areas where wildfires are more likely to be detected over the next **4 days**.

Unlike traditional indices such as the **Fire Weather Index (FWI)**, which assess conditions that influence potential fire behavior, STFH uses historical satellite fire detections, weather forecasts, and environmental data to predict where fires are more likely to occur and be detected.

You can find STFH in the Wildfire Solution under **Fire Danger 🔎**

### **🔍 How Does STFH Work?**

STFH uses machine learning trained on historical fire detections from OroraTech's thermal satellites, combined with weather forecasts and environmental data.

The forecast provides:

- **4-day outlook:** View a separate forecast for each of the next four days.
- **1 km resolution:** Identify hazard patterns across your monitored areas.
- **Updates every 6 hours:** Access forecasts refreshed with the latest weather data.
- **5 hazard levels:** From Very Low to High.

🗺️ How to View STFH in the Wildfire Solution

1. Open the **Layers** tab on the right-hand side of the map.
2. Expand **Fire Danger** and select **Short-Term Fire Hazard**, listed first with the OroraTech logo.
3. Choose the **forecast day** you want to explore.
4. 4\. Use the **map legend** to interpret the hazard levels.

**Understanding the colors:** Warmer colors indicate a higher likelihood of wildfire detection.

💡 **Tip:** Compare STFH with other indices, such as FWI, to get a broader picture of wildfire risk.

#### **🌍 Where Is STFH Available?**

- **Europe:** Greece, Iberian Peninsula
- **North America:** California, Idaho, Alberta, Mexico
- **Other regions:** Australia, South Africa, Indonesia

### **🚒 How Can You Use STFH?**

Use the forecast to support operational planning:

- **Position resources:** Prioritize areas for crews, vehicles, or aircraft.
- **Plan patrols:** Focus monitoring efforts on higher-hazard zones.
- **Schedule activities:** Consider forecast conditions when planning work that could cause ignitions.
- **Prepare briefings:** Include the 4-day outlook in daily operational updates.

⚠️ STFH is a forecasting tool, not a guarantee that a fire will or won't occur.

- **It predicts fire detections, not exact ignitions.** Small, short-lived, or cloud-obscured fires may not be detected by satellites.
- **Forecast uncertainty increases over time.** Day 1 is generally more reliable than Day 4.
- **Local conditions matter.** Areas with limited historical fire data may have less reliable predictions.
- For the best results, **combine STFH with other fire danger indices, local observations, and your operational expertise**.

### **FAQ**

**How is it different from FWI and the other indices under Fire Danger?** FWI and similar indices describe weather-driven fire danger. STFH is trained on actual fire detections, so it forecasts where fires are likely to be observed.

**Why is my area low hazard when FWI is high?** Dry weather alone does not always lead to fires. If an area rarely sees detected fires, for example because there is little fuel or few ignition sources, STFH can stay lower than FWI.

**Is FireWatch Zones available for my region?** We are planning to release a global model covering all regions in Q1/2027.

**Can I access the data outside the Wildfire Solution?** We provide STFH through the OT STAC catalogue. Contact your Customer Success representative for more information.

**Who do I contact with questions or feedback?** Contact your Customer Success representative for feedback or more information.
